Questions to Ask a Classical Homeopath Before Hiring

by Kari J. Kindem, CFHom, CHP, Classical Homeopath, San Jose, CA, USA

These questions are designed to be a guide and to assist those who are NEW to classical homeopathy.
We suggest that a client review these questions before when interviewing a
Homeopath.

  1. Why did you become a Homeopath?

Tip:  See if they love homeopathy!  Find out if they have a genuine, burning passion for and a deep belief in their work.  Look for whether or not this person truly feels called to this kind of work!

You want a homeopath who has time for treating YOU.  Listen carefully to the answer to this question and their reasons.  Beware of egotistical language, discussions of their "importance" in any field, what book(s) they have published, what conferences they have taught or spoken at, etc.  Some of the better and hardest working homeopaths are the ones who get the results by quietly and diligent working on their cases.

  2. Have you had experience treating someone with similar symptoms to my case before?

Tip: Although not absolutely vital, it is extremely helpful and highly recommended by us.

Homeopathy doesn't treat by disease name, but by symptom pictures.  Of course, it helps if a homeopath knows this kind of condition, but it is not essential.  Get  testimonials from clients who have been treated successfully for the same or similar conditions when possible.

  3. How many years have you been practicing homeopathy? Is homeopathy your specialty?

Tip: Look for experience with prescribing for both acute and chronic cases!

Ask the homeopath how many prescriptions they average per month, per year.  Be aware of "experienced" homeopaths who have not actually worked actively with enough clients and recently.

  4. What homeopathic credentials or certification(s) do you  have?

Tip: A Homeopath should have studied professionally (and still be studying!).  The should be well trained and mentored.  They should have studied the advanced water dosing method

Remember, there is no licensing in the USA for homeopaths.  Having any designations does NOT guarantee that they are a truly gifted homeopath and is not a measure of competence in case work!  Look for  a good success rate, client testimonials and a homeopath's experience with issues similar to yours.

  5. Where did you study homeopathy and for how long?

Tip: The answers should be a specific program or intense study with a knowledgeable person(s).

This includes being involved in an ongoing way with various professional Forums with reputable homeopathic organization, school or institute.

  6. Who did/do you mentor with in homeopathy?  Who did/do you have your clinical experience with in homeopathy?

Tip: Ask if there is a certain homeopath they are trained or influenced by

Find out where they received their clinical training.  It should be with LIVE CASES, in a clinical and supervised setting that includes full chronic intake and follow-up on such cases.

  7. What other continuing education do you  have in homeopathy?

Tip: Ask if they are taking any continuing educational course, seminars, attending conferences etc.

Continuing education is always important because homeopathy is a very complex field of study!

  8. Do you follow the teachings and the methods of classical homeopathy by Hahnemann?

Tip: The answer should ABSOLUTELY be a YES!

Classical homeopathy means ONE (1) remedy is given at one time (in water) and the person's response is judged based on the action of that single remedy.

  9. Have you read the Organon?

Tip: This is the main source to learn homeopathy and know the principles!

They should have read it!  Most very good homeopaths are reading and studying it repeatedly.

  10. How long is our initial client interview?  Do you take the entire history of a client?  What paper work do you require of me.

Tip: The answer should be 1 - 2 hours, with the ENTIRE history requested in great detail.

Expect to to receive and complete  intake paperwork to complete in great detail.  Be very suspicious of the homeopath's skill if you are NOT asked to complete a detailed questionnaire have a personal interview about it and/or to not provide written details in paperwork.  You should have a consultation interview via skype, or person whenever possible.

  11. Do you treat miasmatically?.

Tip: The answer should be YES!

This is the simple definition of Miasms:
in homeopathy, the theory of miasms originates in Hahnemann's book "The Chronic Diseases" which was published in 1828. The three miasms given in that work are held to be responsible for all diseases of a chronic nature and to form the foundation or basis for all disease in general. The key miasms are: Psora, Sycosis and Syphilis.  Combination miasms are: Tubercular and Cancer miasms.

  12. What type of homeopathic potencies do you use? (Dry or water potencies?)

Tip: The best answer is potencies given in water!

Classical homeopaths who study and are trained in the advanced water dosing methods of the 5th and 6th Organon by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann will know how to successfully use water remedies.

  13. How do you dose? Do you use just one remedy at a time? Do you consider the sensitivity of the individual?

Tip: The answer should be the use of ONE (1) remedy only, given with the correct water dosing.

The method involves water dosing of a test dose for three (3) days.  Then to watch and wait to see the reaction to the test dose. The answer should NOT have you taking more than one remedy at any time.

  14. How do you choose the remedy?

Tip: This answer is very important! They should use NO gadgets or machines or muscle testing to choose a remedy! The best answer is, the remedy is selected on the totality of characteristic symptoms of the unique client.

Professional Homeopathic software will greatly speed the research for an already competent homeopath. Using computer software is not a  guarantee of proficiency, skill or exactness.  Knowledge of Materia Medica and experience must be a part of a choice of any remedy.

  15. Do you follow a fixed remedy protocol or system or sequence of homeopathy for every client with a similar diagnosis?

Tip: The answer should be NO!
    TO BE SUCCESSFUL. CLASSICAL
HOMEOPATHY MUST  BE PERSONALIZED TO PERSON'S UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES AND ISSUES!

Classical homeopathy always AVOIDS the same protocol for everyone!  We urge you to AVOID ANYTHING that looks like an allopathic protocol - such as a "Remedy X - take it dry for days/months protocol", "pillow dosing, or a homeopath who insists on "remedy #1 this week, then remedy #2 next week" - a pre-formatted schedule of any type.

Any treatment philosophy that is systemized or given as a 'cookie cutter' set of remedies over a standard period of time is NOT classical homeopathy!

  16. Do you follow through with your clients after they take their remedies? How do you monitor progress?

Tip: Regular case management and follow-up is essential!

The importance of follow through and maintaining contact with a client by the homeopath after taking the remedy is crucial to developing rapport between homeopathy and client and monitoring the client's progress. Be very concerned bya homeopath who does not make clear arrangements for regular follow-up after the client is given a remedy.

  17. How available are you in an emergency, nights, weekends?  How accessible are you to contact?
How accessible are you after hours and/or on weekends and holiday periods?

Tip: Ask for he homeopath's business schedule.

Ask about your homeopath's work schedule.  Make sure this schedule and the homeopaths availability matches your expectations of a professional who caring for you and/or family. Expect quality client care and responsiveness from a true professional homeopath that you are trusting with your precious family - and accept nothing less!

  18. Will you treat acutes (short term illness) with homeopathy?

Tip: The answer should be YES.

Acute are a large part of homeopathic care and should be treated with homeopathy, just like chronic conditions.

Other Questions to Ask
Additional questions to give you more insights about a Homeopath

  1. Do you have a family? Do you/did you treat your own family with homeopathy?  Do you treat yourself with homeopathy?

Tip: The answer 0s likely to be YES - and is often one of the main reason the homeopath became a professional!

  2. Do you mix homeopathy with herbs, other drugs, things?

Tip: The answer should be ONLY homeopathic remedies other than homeopathic cell salts, Bach Flower remedies, certain nutritional products, or certain supplements and/or vitamins - and sometimes dietary recommendations.

  3. Do you advocate conventional vaccination?

Tip: The answer should be NO!

  4. What is your view on allopathic vaccination?

Tip: many homeopaths don't know about the dangers of vaccinations.

Even though it is so obvious if you know homeopathic principles, don't expect enlightenment here. Some homeopaths don't like to say their view on allopathic vaccinations until they know you well enough.

  5. Are you willing to use nosodes in potency to unblock a case, if necessary?

The answer should be YES - but ONLY if the homeopath is trained and experienced with this type of treatment!

Nosodes are very deep acting, powerful remedies made from diseased tissues. Nosodes should NOT be used by any UNSUPERVISED CLIENTS at any time OR by Homeopath who is not professionally trained and very experience in their case use.
