What Are Cataracts?
Alternative Treatments of Cataracts by Dr. Edwin Kondrot

What Area Cataracts?
Cataracts are caused by oxidative changes in the lens of the eye, which can lead to gradual clouding and impairment of vision. Cataracts are mostly seen in older people, although exposure to radiation, excessive sunlight, pollutants, and certain medications can increase the risk for anyone.

Symptoms of Cataracts

The most common symptoms of a cataract include:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision
  • Colors seem faded
  • Double vision or multiple images in one eye - sometimes better as the cataract gets larger
  • Frequent prescription changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses
  • Glare
  • Headlights, lamps, or sunlight may appear too bright
  • Halo may appear around lights
  • Poor night vision

Progression in Cataracts

  • Small cataracts mean vision is a little blurry, like looking through a cloudy piece of glass.

  • Cataracts will grow slowly, so vision gets worse gradually.

  • Over time, the cloudy area in the lens may get larger, and the cataract may increase in size.

  • Seeing may become more difficult

  • Clear lens slowly changes to a yellowish/brownish color, adding a brownish tint to vision

  • Over time, increased tinting may make it more difficult to read and perform other routine activities.

  • Gradual change in the amount of tinting does not affect the sharpness of the image transmitted to the retina

  • May not be able to identify blues and purples; may be seeing black instead of purple or blue
