What Is
Molluscum
Molluscum contagiosum
should be treated with homeopathic remedies using
constitutional care because the person's immune system is affected. If
left alone they will sometimes go away on their own. They can last six to eight
weeks, but some of these growths last up to five years. It is caused
by a large DNA Pox virus. The incubation period ranges from weeks to
months from 14 to 50 days typically.
Molluscum is a common skin disorder
caused by a pox virus that enters the skin through small breaks of hair
follicles. It is referred to as the water wart. Many times this skin
aliment is confused with skin warts.
Molluscum are small flesh colored or
pink colored and are shaped like a dome. It starts out as small
bumps on the skin that have an indented center. The center of these growths
appears to be indented. They are shiny, and many times can become red and
inflamed. That center may itch, become tender, irritated, and sometimes painful.
-
Molluscum is very contagious, so
individuals who have the virus should remain away from other children, or
anyone with a compromised immune system.
-
It appears in areas of the skin that
touch, such as the arms, and groin area.
-
Molluscum can also be found on the face,
lips, mouth, chest, abdomen, eyelids and buttocks. They can appear larger in
size on the face.
-
Children five years of age and younger
often get molluscum more than adults.
-
Since it is found on the skin can be
transmitted to another person by skin contact or through the sharing
of clothing.
-
You can also get it by sharing towels
with an infected person, or by swimming in the same pool.
-
Adults who get molluscum usually get it
through sexual contact.
-
Molluscum is very common in tropical
climates that allow the virus to breathe and grow due to its warmth and
humidity.
How Is Molluscum
Spread?
- Direct spread from skin-to-skin contact.
- Spread from clothes or towels.
- Sexual transmission: Case studies of
transmitted molluscum contagiosum describe a relatively short
incubation period, with infections appearing on newborn infants between ages of a
few days to 6 weeks following maternal exposure.
- Other factors: transmission may be related to poor
hygiene and climatic factors, such as warmth and humidity.
Types of
Molluscum
Molluscum effects
both sexes equally. There are forms of
infection:
- Childhood variety: spread by skin-to-skin contact.
Molluscum contagiosum primarily affects children and young adults. It
appears to have a bimodal age distribution. The first is in childhood, and
then second is in early adulthood (age 15 - 29 years).
- Adult variety: usually sexually transmitted.
