Infectious mononucleosis is known
as "the kissing disease" or "mono". It is caused by the Epstein Barr Virus
(EBV). Mononucleosis is a continuation of viral infection caused by
Epstein Barr virus after 2 to 3 weeks. It is characterized by a sore throat, fever, malaise and weakness.
The virus is a member of the Herpes virus family and is mainly
transferred from one person to the other through saliva. This means
that you can contract this disease if you kiss someone who has already
been infected.
The
throat
pain
is
often
quite
severe
and
may
be
confused
with
strep throat.
On
physical
examination,
the
doctor
may find
an
enlarged
liver
and/or
spleen.
Heart
and
central
nervous
system
involvement
are
rare. Mononucleosis
in adults will not be a serious as they
will have built up antibodies and immunity over their lifetime typically.
It’s
estimated that
95%
of
adults
in their
30's
and
40's
have
antibodies to the virus.
Mononucleosis is bigger issue in children and teenagers who have not built up
immunity.
Symptoms of Mononucleosis

Symptoms include fatigue,
fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, headache, skin rash and swelling of
the spleen.

If symptoms such as throat pain persist after
2 to 3 weeks, further blood examination is done.

One of the main signs of mono
is a sore throat that may last for 1 to 4 weeks.

Other symptoms include swollen
glands in the neck and armpits.

Prolonged symptoms of mononucleosis
like fever, fatigue and weakness is sometimes diagnosed or confused with
chronic fatigue syndrome.

normal
to moderately
elevated
white cell count,

increased
number of
lymphocytes

being
atypical
and
positive
“mono spot”
results.

"spot
test" checks for certain
antibodies to the
Epstein-Barr virus
and
confirms
mononucleosis.

positive

gets

infection, the Epstein-Barr virus

or
blood for the rest

Remedies For Treating Acute Mononucleosis

Apis
Tonsils and
uvula are swollen to double their normal size but they are rather
pinkish and not as red as the
Belladonna sore throat. Tonsils and uvula look like as if filled with gelatin. The person will
want to sucks ice or have cold drinks to relieve the pain.

Arsenicum album Symptoms of
fatigue, lethargy and great weakness.
Trembling with muscle pain, aching in joints, chilliness and burning pains
in the throat, digestive tract and elsewhere in the body. Muscle fatigue
upon the slightest bit of exertion. Fear of losing control. Anxious.
Fear of disease. Thirsty for sips of cold water or hot drinks. Anxiety
and depression with the depression from severe anxiety about illness and the
fear of dying. Obsessive-compulsive behavior like hand washing.
Fear of germs or vomiting. Fear of catching a disease and especially
cancer. Restless, especially at night where they toss and turn in
bed. Pessimistic nature. This state can start in children exposed to
the death of a parent or loved one, or after an adult has taken care of a
dying relative for months. Fearing that no one can help her, this person
goes from one doctor to another and is often labeled a hypochondriac.
She relies greatly on a trusted doctor, and when the physician moves away or
retires, depression sets in.

Belladonna
Good for early stages of
mononucleosis with sudden onset of fever with face flushes and a painful
throat. Throat is red and painful.

Ferrum phosphoricum For the
early stages of a fever accompanied by a painful cough and sore
chest.

Hepar sulphur
Sore throat with sharp pains, as if a splinter or piece of glass were being
poked into the tonsils. Throat is extremely sensitive to touch and cold and
is better from warmth. Sore throat is often associated with hoarseness or
croupy cough.

Kali muriaticum Useful
for treating infectious mononucleosis. Typically used for individuals with
extremely swollen tonsils, but may also be useful for treating
infectious mononucleosis when administered in conjunction with
Ferrum phosphoricum.

Lycopodium
Lycopodium should be one of the first remedies
considered for the treatment of mononucleosis. Severe sore throat
pain with swollen lymph glands, night sweats, and liver or spleen
involvement. Usually a right sided remedy. On the mental emotional state
there is inner insecurity and fear of authority; fear of failure. Boys needing this remedy can be somewhat
shy, wimpy and cautious. Fearful of new situations. Children can be can be nasty at home with
parents, though good outside of the home due fear of authority; can
also be very bossy or mean to their younger siblings.

Mercurius solubilis Severe pain while swallowing, red and swollen tonsils with white patches;
swollen lymph nodes, coated tongue. Bluish-red throat and painful sore throat
with drooling or salivation and with a
constant desire to swallow. Children are often drooling during sleep. Bad breath
and/or body odor. Person is
extremely sensitive to temperature changes. Night sweats. Fever is accompanied by profuse sweating, alternating
hot and cold body temperature, weakness in the limbs and painful, aching
bones. There may be indentations from the teeth along the side of
the tongue and a swollen tongue. Often sensitivity to any change in
temperature. Weakness and swollen glands in the neck and groin.
There may be a strong urge to swallow and great thirst. Very helpful for sore throats in the
later stages of mono.

Phytolacca Dark blue /purplish throat with pain radiating towards the ears.
Swollen painful lymph nodes.
Aching throughout the body, throat inflammation and pain when
swallowing that radiates to the ears upon swallowing.

Stramonium Throat, pain and pain in lymphatic tissue and cervical
area. Common remedy for children with either violent behavior or a fear
of violence. Nightmares or night terrors. For issues after ailments from fright, with intense fear of the dark and of robbers.
Children can also be more withdrawn, cautious and fearful in general.

Other helpful remedies
include: Lachesis,
Conium and
Baryta carbonica.

Mononucleosis:
- Echinacea Purpurea - immune system tonic
and a blood cleanser. Used for diseases both bacterial and viral in
nature. Taken as capsules or and as an herbal extract that can be taken in
juice or water. Recommended dose is 900mg daily for 5 to 7 days. Do not be
take for a prolonged period after the illness has subsided.
- Astragulus
- helps build the immune system.
Observed clinically to be an anti-viral and antiseptic properties. Helpful
in the treatment of fatigue and weakness, symptoms that are common in
Epstein-Barr.
