What Are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are also known as "myomas" and they are fed by hormones. They are non-cancerous tumors that can cause heavy bleeding and/or grow large enough to impinge on other organs. Some fibroid tumors are the size of a seed, others grow to the size of a golf ball or even a grapefruit.   About 70 to 80 percent of women experience fibroids by the age of 50. There is also a genetic tendency to produce fibroids, so if your mother or aunts developed them, you are also likely to. Uterine fibroids depend on hormones to grow. Uterine fibroids are the most common tumors of the female genital tract. The will often shrink naturally after menopause when the level of estrogen, the female hormone that circulates in the blood, decreases dramatically. However, if the woman is not using HRT - Hormone Replacement Therapy they may not. Since uterine fibroids are fed by hormones, fibroids may shrink during and after menopause.

Remember that even if a uterine fibroid is removed surgically, they can still grow back because they are fed by female hormones!  This is why homeopathy is such an important option for treatment, because it is non-invasive and treats the person as a whole, not just their uterus.

Fibroids, Fertility and Pregnancy
Fibroids can also interfere with natural conception and fertility. They can also dramatically increase in size during pregnancy because of the increase in estrogen levels during pregnancy. After pregnancy, the fibroids normally reduce  back to their pre-pregnancy size.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids - These are the most common symptoms of fibroids:

  • Anemia in some women, due to blood loss

  • Heavy bleeding between or during your periods that includes blood clots

  • Increased menstrual cramping

  • Increased urination

  • Menstruation that lasts longer than usual

  • Pain in the pelvis and/or lower back

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Pressure or fullness in your lower abdomen

  • Pressure on rectum, bladder or ovaries causing pain, constipation and urinary problems

  • Pressure or fullness in your lower abdomen

  • Swelling or enlargement of the abdomen

The Types of Fibroids

  • Subserosal  - 55% of uterine fibroids are this type. These form on the outside of your uterus. They may grow large enough to make your womb appear bigger on one side.

  • Intramural  - 40% of uterine fibroids are this type. They appear within the lining of the uterus (endometrium). Intramural fibroids may grow larger and actually stretch your womb.

  • Pedunculated  - 5% of uterine fibroids are this type.  When subserosal tumors develop a stem, they become pedunculated fibroids.

  • Submucosal  - found and develop in the inner lining (myometrium) of your uterus. These tumors are less common than other types. They may cause heavy menstrual bleeding and trouble conceiving.

How Are Fibroids Diagnosed?
Normally a woman will first get an ultrasound at their gynecologist’s office to determine if they have uterine fibroids or not. Ultrasound will not show other underlying diseases or all the existing fibroids. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to see if the woman may be a candidate for nonsurgical uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) which blocks the blood vessels that feed the fibroid to destroy the tumors. The MRI determines if a tumor can be embolized and also detects alternate causes for the symptoms, helps the doctor identify any pathology that could prevent a women from having a successful UFE and avoid ineffective treatments. MRI's enhance diagnosis of fibroids and the possible surgical interventions.

Women should be aware of all of their treatment options - including homeopathy!  Those considering any surgical treatment for uterine fibroids should also get a second opinion from a radiologist qualified to interpret the MRI and determine if they are candidates for that procedure.

Tradition Ways to Treat Fibroids

  • Myomectomy - cuts out the fibroids without removing the uterus – but fibroids often will still grow back

  • Hysterectomy - stops the bleeding, but can result in more hot flashes, loss of energy and loss of libido

  • Hormone Replacement Therapy - may be needed after a hysterectomy
