longer.

What Causes
Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
IBS is believed to be caused by and extremely sensitive large
intestine. This sensitivity can be the results of stress, imbalance of
bacteria in the intestines and abnormal levels of serotonin. Typically muscles
in the gastrointestinal tract move in a coordinated manner as food passes from
the stomach to the rectum. In the case of IBS, muscle movements are either much
stronger or much slower causing either diarrhea or constipation.
- IBS may affect the body’s ability to absorb nutrients,
creating more issues for the person.
- Up to 60 percent of IBS patients also experience
anxiety and depression.
- Levels of the
brain chemical serotonin usually are low among
patients with IBS.
- People with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) also may be
sensitive to certain foods:
- alcohol
- artificial sweeteners
- chemical additives
- chocolate
- dairy products
- gluten
- red meat
- sodas
