The cause of PCOS is not clearly understood and there is usually a genetic predisposition. What is of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?

• Polycystic ovarian syndrome or disease develops when egg follicles get trapped just under the surface of the ovary and thereby are unable to release their eggs. Instead, multiple small cysts form.
• PCOS is usually more prevalent in the young women during their reproductive period.
• It is a complex disorder characterized by excessive production of hormones called androgens by the ovaries and the adrenal glands.
• Due to this overproduction, the ovarian follicles fail to mature.

Signs and Symptoms of PCOS

• Acne associated with oily skin
• Few, irregular or absent menstrual periods
• Hirsutism (excessive hair growth) and androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness) due to elevated androgens (testosterone)
• Lack of ovulation causing infertility
• Obesity: Usually centered around the lower torso (apple shaped)
• Symptoms of premenstrual syndrome: mood swings, bloating, etc.
• Small, multiple ovarian cysts which look like a string of pearls
• High levels of testosterone (male hormones)
• Enlargement of ovaries
• Increased insulin levels

Medical Diagnostic Procedures for PCOS

• Serum (Blood) Values:
  • The ratio Luteinizing Hormone (LH) level to the level of FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) is greater than  3:1
  • There is usually reversal of the estradiol to estrone ratio.
  • The estrone level is markedly low.
  • Androstenedione is elevated.
  • Serum testosterone and DHEA-S may be elevated. 
• Laparoscopy: Bilaterally polycystic ovaries are detected which is the main feature of PCOS.
• Sonography: Transvaginal sonography is especially useful in obese patients.

• Calcarea Carbonica

  • PCOS with profuse periods that are prolonged.
