What Is Motion Sickness?
Motion sickness includes airsickness, carsickness and seasickness.  It is an acute condition that causes a feeling of nausea and malaise. It is usually accompanied by vomiting, headache and vertigo. It is caused by an over stimulation of the vestibular nerve in the inner ear which controls balance. The condition is usually brought about by motion that is accompanied by acceleration and deceleration. The body has a hard time keeping up with the continual changes brought on by the constant motion and movement.

Motion sickness is common in children who are susceptible to the motions of riding in cars and boats. Once motion sickness starts,  the first symptom is usually nausea. Keeping the person hydrated is important to avoid a more serious situation. Motion sickness can be accompanied by:

  • anxiety

  • claustrophobia.

  • dizziness

  • headache

  • hyperventilation

  • inability to concentrate

  • sweats or chills

  • vomiting which can be violent and prolonged leading to dehydration. Keeping the person hydrated is important to avoid a ore serious situation.

Homeopathic Remedies for Motion Sickness

  • Argentum nitricum
    Dizziness, faintness, nausea, retching and possibly balance or perception problems. The person may feel claustrophobic or be extremely anxious and excitable. Eating too much sweet or salty food may have contributed to the problem. 
  • Arsenicum album
    Used when a person is very anxious and feel both restless and exhausted. Nausea and vomiting can be accompanied by burning pain. The sight and smell of food, or odors of any kind, may make the nausea unbearable. Burning sensation in the throat or stomach and want frequent sips of water. 
  • Arnica
    Usually a more sudden onset.
    Often the nausea will be accompanied by a bruised, achy feeling, so they can’t get comfortable.

  • Borax
    Use for nausea caused by downward motions, such as landing in an airplane.
  • Bryonia
    Nausea at sea, less if lying down quietly in a dark room. Drinks or makes any movements severe nausea sets in. Severe headache as if a tight bandage around the head relieved in darkness. Dryness of mouth with excessive thirst. The moment they drink water a yellowish bilious fluid is vomited out with relief of nausea like with Phosphorus. A person needing this remedy usually wants to stay completely still and not be talked to or touched. Nausea and vomiting, with pain and pressure in the stomach, can be worse from even minor movements. The person may have a dry mouth and want cold drinks.

  • Cocculus Indicus
    Most popular remedy for motion sickness. Relieves motion sickness with vertigo and feeling weak, and improved by heat. Use particularly if nausea and vertigo or other type of dizziness are present. Nausea, especially when it worsens with the sight or smell of food, is a keynote of this remedy. Feeling extremely weak and dizzy and have to lie down, or may have an empty or hollow feeling in the stomach. Symptoms may be worse after becoming cold, moving about or from lack of sleep. This remedy is often used for car or sea sickness, when watching moving objects worsens the nausea and dizziness.  Sudden nausea with a feeling of emptiness in head. Headache is more at the back of head and nape of neck. There is complete aversion to food and drinks. When nausea and giddiness is felt at sea.

  • Ipecac
    Used to relieve nausea and vomiting with great salivation and a clean tongue. Vomiting doesn't relieve nausea. 

  • Kali Bich
    Used for severe nausea and dizziness that's worse from standing up. Motion sickness accompanied by headache, nausea, and ringing in the ears. The person may feel weak and achy, especially in the bony areas of the face or head. The vomit may be bright yellow.

  • Nux Vomica
    Used for severe nausea with an intense headache that may be at the back of the head or over one eye. The person desires warmth and loathes food, tobacco and coffee. There may also be bloating, gagging and possibly retching with nothing coming up.

  • Opium
    Hot or cold sweat on the forehead. Drowsiness and sleepiness will usually be present. A mental fog often ensues.

  • Petroleum
    Persistent nausea with an empty feeling in the stomach. When smell of diesel or petrol fumes give more nausea. There is sudden hunger pang, food gives relief to travel sickness specially sour foodDizziness and nausea that occur when riding in a car or boat. The person feels a little better after warmth and eating food. There may be excessive salivation, stomach pain, and pain or stiffness at the back of the head or neck.  Worse with light, noise or when attempting to sit up.

  • Rhus Toxicodendron
    Used for  air sickness with nausea and vomiting but no appetite.
    The person may feel very giddy when attempting to sit up, may have an intense headache around the forehead, and his or her scalp may feel sensitive to the touch. Dryness of the mouth and throat and unquenchable thirst.

  • Sepia
    Used for motion sickness brought on by reading while in a moving vehicle. Used when the person feels dizzy and irritable, and the nausea is made worse by lying on one side. A headache will often accompany these problems. The sight of food can intensify the nausea, although the person may still want sour things.
  • Tabacum
    Used for
    motion sickness with severe nausea and vomiting. The face will be pale with cold sweats all over the body. Nauseous, faint, green, extremely pale, icy cold, or very tired with a terrible sinking feeling in the pit of the stomach. These symptoms may also be accompanied by a cold sweat, yellow or yellow-green vomit and a headache that feels like a tight band pulled around the head. Better with cold, fresh air or when closing the eyes. Worse with any movement.

  • Theridon
    Used when the person velops nausea, giddiness and headache when they see the other objects passing fast while in motion. Nausea and headache increases on closing the eye. They are nervous in nature and while travelling this nervousness increases.
