What Is Graves Disease? Graves’ Disease is a form of a thyroid
autoimmune disease It is an immune system
disorder that results in the overproduction of thyroid hormones, also know as
hyperthyroidism.
The various signs and symptoms are listed below include visible goiter,
eye troubles, heat intolerance, itching skin. etc. Graves’ Disease is much more
common in females by a rate of five time more than men.
Graves’
disease may present clinically with one of the following characteristic signs:
Exophthalmos and non-pitting edema (pretibial myxedema)
are the two
signs that are truly diagnostic of Graves’ Disease and re. not seen in
other hyperthyroid condition.
Goiterwhich is an enlarged
thyroid gland and is of the diffuse type. A large goiter will be visible to the
naked eye, but a smaller goiter may be detectable only by physical exam. Occasionally, goiter is not
clinically detectable, but may be seen only with CT or ultrasound examination of
the thyroid.
Hyperthyroidism,
which means the over-production of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4.
Hyperthyroidism in Graves disease is
confirmed as with any other cause of hyperthyroidism, by measuring elevated
blood levels of free (unbound) T3 and T4.
Differentiating the two common forms of hyperthyroidism
of Graves disease vs. Toxic multinodular goiter is important to determine
proper treatment.
Useful laboratory measurements in Graves include TSH
- thyroid-stimulating hormone usually
low in Graves’ disease due to negative feedback from the elevated T3 and T4 and
elevated iodine.
A biopsy to obtain not normally required, but may be
obtained if a thyroidectomy is performed.
Differentiating the two common forms of hyperthyroidism such as Graves disease
and Toxic multi-nodular goiter is important to determine
proper treatment.
Measuring TSH-receptor antibodies with the
h-TBII assay has
been proven efficient and was the most practical approach found in one study.
