Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disorder that causes
hypothyroidism
is Hashimoto’s disease. It is a condition that which your immune system attacks your thyroid.
The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland at the base of your neck
below your Adam's apple. It is a critical part of your endocrine system, and
produces the thyroid hormones that coordinate many of your body's activities.
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a
condition caused by inflammation of the thyroid gland.
T lymphocytes, a type of
cell involved in the inflammation process, invade the thyroid gland cause
silent, painless inflammation that destroys it; ultimately, the individual
produces little or no thyroid hormone and becomes hypothyroid.
The underlying cause of the
autoimmune process remains unknown.
Hashimoto's thyroiditis tends to
occur in families. It can be associated with other autoimmune conditions
such as Type 1 diabetes or celiac disease.
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is 5 to
10 times more common in womenthan in men and most often starts in
adulthood.
Blood drawn from people with
Hashimoto's thyroiditis typically reveals an increased number of
antibodies against thyroid-specific proteins, including thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin.
The thyroid makes hormones called
T3 and T4 that regulate how the body uses energy. Thyroid hormone levels are
controlled by the pituitary gland, which is a pea-sized gland in the brain. It
makes thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH),
which triggers the thyroid to make thyroid hormone.
In Hashimoto's, there is
inflammation. Hashimoto's is also called chronic lymphocytic
thyroiditis. The result is
hypothyroidism
which means aunderactive thyroid gland. Hashimoto's disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United
States. It can occur at any age in both men and children, but it usually affects
middle-aged women. During aging, the thyroid gland starts becoming less
efficient, and produces less of T3 and T4, especially in women.
Stress! Stress depletes the adrenals, resulting in
adrenal fatigue and starts a cascade that
unravels wellness. Stress management in any chronic autoimmune disease
as well as healthy diet and nutritional balancing, along with
homeopathy is essential for recovery!
Glutamine, Zinc and Vitamin D Depletion Zinc and glutamine two substances required for
rebuilding intestinal lining. Vitamin D is
required for proper gut barrier function. In times of stress, the body will
pull these substances from the intestines and use them for other things,
such as production of adrenal hormones. In prolonged stress, there is
low stomach acid which is needed to extract zinc from proteins. Vegans and
vegetarians are low in Zinc and glutamine.
Gluten Sensitivity Gluten sensitivity and Celiac disease are involved
in many of the autoimmune conditions including Hashimoto’s, Graves’ Disease
and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Lab tests can be
done to determine if you have Celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity. Some
individuals remove gluten from their diets and find out they were sensitive.
Gluten Sensitivity and Cross Reactive Proteins
Cross reactive to multiple other proteins including grains like rice, quinoa
and corn etc. Other may also be allergic or intolerant to eggs, dairy,
nuts and seeds and nightshade plants.
Fungal Infections Candida is a fungus can cause intestinal permeability, called
Leaky Gut Syndrome. It is
involved autoimmune disease and food sensitivities
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) SIBOis an overgrowth of bacterial in the small small intestine. This
overgrowth can be caused by antibiotic overuse, starchy foods and other
things resulting in intestinal permeability.
Parasites Parasites are can be present.
Labs can test for
their presence.
