What Is Leaky
Gut Syndrome?
A leaky
gut is a result of the gut lining becoming inflamed due to food intolerances,
drug ingestion, bacterial and viral infections, and stress. The cells of the
intestinal track are only ONE CELL THICK and can be damaged. Leaky gut
syndrome happens when partially digested food, toxins, and bacteria pass through
the small intestine and enter the bloodstream through spaces in the gut wall. Gaps in the gut wall allow
tiny food particles and other foreign
microbes to enter the body and create an immune system response that impacts the
entire system including brain function. The damaged gut cells are then unable
to do their job properly. They can't
manufacture the enzymes that are vital to good digestion. This means
proper digestion is
impaired and the proper absorption of nutrients is effected. Damaging substances
then invade the bloodstream. This can result in food intolerances, allergies,
skin issues, joint inflammation, impaired brain function and it can also trigger
autoimmune diseases. When
the
immune system becomes
overburdened by toxins that enter the liver, the toxins are flushed back into
the blood where they are sent to connective tissues and muscles.
Leaky gut syndrome
is connected with allergies,
autism,
inflammatory bowel,
Crohn’s disease,
fibromyalgia,
chronic fatigue syndrome,
diabetes, arthritis, pancreatic dysfunction,
giardia parasite infections,
irritable bowel syndrome, lupus - and
many more conditions.
What Causes Leaky
Gut Syndrome?
Many factors contribute to
a person developing a leaky gut syndrome. The will differ from person to
person, but some combination of the following will be present:
-
Stress - chronic and repeated stress!
-
Alcoholic
beverages
-
Antibiotics
and other drugs
-
Bacteria - pathogenic
- such as streptococcus or staphylococcus
-
Bacteria
that is non-pathogenic, such as klebsiella or pseudomonas
-
Candida -
yeast infection /overgrowth
-
Diets high in
refined sugar
-
Diets low in fiber
-
Exposure to
environmental toxins and pesticides
-
Heavy metal
toxins including from vaccinations
-
Nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin and ibuprofen)
-
Parasitic
infections
-
Poor
digestion
-
Inflammatory
bowel disease
-
Vaccinations with
heavy metals
-
Zinc
deficiency
Leaky Gut
Syndrome Symptoms
Whether or not leaky gut is the cause of various states of disease, or whether
it indirectly exacerbates those conditions, we know that a variety of symptoms
are associated with intestinal permeability. These leaky gut syndrome symptoms
include:
-
Allergies -
food and environmental
-
Anxiety
-
Bloating or
flatulence
-
Candida
(yeast overgrowth)
-
Diarrhea and
constipation - This relates to irritation of the colon. Stagnant waste
putrefies and an overgrowth of bacteria and parasites can occur.
-
Fatigue
-
Headaches
-
Impaired
immune system function
-
Impaired
memory - when the friendly and unfriendly bacteria in the gut. There are
dangerous byproducts of the unfriendly bacteria, such as ammonia, that are
detrimental to brain function.
-
Memory
cognition and concentration are poor
-
Moodiness or
irritability
-
Nutritional
deficiencies
-
Skin rashes -
The body's larges organ performs the job of eliminating toxins. Rashes may
be related to the skin's ability to conduct detoxification.
The Gut's Protection
Layers
There are 5 layers or barriers in the gut which are
designed to protect us from our internal environment including ingested toxins,
organisms and allergens:
- 1st layer - FRIENDLY BACTERIA
- the bulk of the content of our intestines (stool)
- 2nd layer - MUCUS COATING
- the ining the inside of the intestine
- 3rd layer - GUT LINING CELLS
- loss of tight junctions between these cells called enterocytes
that is the main reason for a leaky gut
- 4th layer - IMMUNE SYSTEM
- which is concentrated in the extensive Peyer’s patches around the
intestines
- 5th layer – LIVER
- which receives and processes everything which is absorbed via the
intestines
About The Gut Micro-Flora
The intestines hols about 3.5 pounds of bacteria in a micro-flora community. Some of these bacteria are "friendly," and other
bacteria create problems for the body. The “good" bacteria
enhance immunity, help to heal gut infections and they reduce the amount of
toxic by-products in the bowel. The most important “good bacteria” are lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium.
Lactobacilli (acidopholus) reside mostly in the upper small intestine.
Bifidobacteria prefer the
lower small intestine and large intestine.
When friendly
microflora attach themselves to the cell wall of our gut, they occupy valuable
“real estate” so that unfriendly flora can’t move in. They establish themselves
in the and do a very important job of 1.) producing of vitamins such as B12 and Folic acid.
2) synthesizing short chain fatty acids 3.) producing enzymes such as lactase
to help us digest our food 4.) providing detoxification.
Any
imbalance between the friendly microflora and unfriendly bacteria is called
dysbiosis and means health issues can arise. An imbalance of microflora can
contribute to:
-
Colocynthis
Lower abdominal pains and cramping that
cause one to double over into a ball; food and drink taste bitter;
sensitivities to potatoes and starch; feels better from coffee.
-
Magnesia carbonica
Sin smells sour; sour belching and vomiting of bitter water; eats all
day; aversion to vegetables, green foods, green fruit; feels worse form
dairy products, starches, potatoes, cabbage; thirsty at night craving
for meat, fruit, acids, vegetables, bread and butter.
-
Magnesia
muriaticum
Main remedy for small intestine health; food sensitivities to dairy
products; helps liver and nerves; diarrhea from dairy; lots of trapped
painful gas.
-
Nux vomica
food sits like a rock in the stomach;
indigestion; anger, irritability, rage; craves stimulants and alcohol;
craves fats, bitter and spicy foods; coffee milk, beer and water don’t
taste right.
Recommendations for
Improving a Leaky Gut
-
Avoid Antibiotics!
Antibiotics
allow candida to thrive.
Avoiding sugar and white starches will help to correct leaky gut syndrome. The
sugars to avoid include fructose, honey, molasses, and simple carbohydrate/snack
foods such as potatoes, chips, cakes, cookies, desserts, sodas, fruit-juice and
ice-cream.
-
Diet
Restrictions
Eat natural, organic high fiber foods, including uncooked vegetables, whole
grains, bran and legumes and low glycemic index foods.
-
Avoid Fermented
foods: Avoid products that have been fermented or contain yeast. This
includes alcohol, bread, soy sauce and vinegar.
-
Avoid
fruit and
fruit sugars: Avoid especially fruit juices until candida has been
brought under control. Honey should also be avoided at the beginning of your
anti-candida diet, then reintroduced later.
-
Avoid
fungal
foods: avoid Mushrooms and cheeses.
-
Avoid
sugar: including fructose, honey, molasses and simple
carbohydrate/snack foods such as potatoes, chips, cakes, cookies,
desserts, sodas, fruit-juice and ice-cream.
-
Avoid white-starch foods: white bread, cakes, pasta (unless
it’s whole grain), white rice, potatoes, and all refined flours.
-
Eat more Fiber
-
Digestive Enzymes
-
Digestive enzymes will help reduce symptoms associated
with leaky gut syndrome.
-
Foods
recommended for their enzyme content are pineapples, papaya, avocados,
mangos and bananas.
Sprouts are also a good source of digestive enzymes.
Adults over age 50 often are
deficient in important enzymes such as protease, lipase, and amylase.
-
Enzymes
supplements can improve
the absorption of nutrients from the gut and prevent partially digested proteins
from being absorbed and overworking the liver.
-
Fish Oils
and Essential Oils
-
Increase your
consumption of essential oils.
-
Take supplements that contain fish oils,
flax-seed oil, borage, and evening primrose oils.
-
Gut Repair
For Candida, Parasites,
Fungal
and Other Infections
These factors all contribute to leaky gut syndrome. Candida is yeast-fungal organism that grows roots through your
intestinal tract which are feed by the gut bacteria. These roots will compromise the
intestinal lining and can cause leaky gut. Reducing candida will help restore
and repair a leaky gut.

Probiotics
-
Probiotics
are “friendly bacteria” that live in your intestines.
-
They
enhance immunity, help to heal gut infections, and they reduce the amount of
toxic by-products in the bowel.
-
The most important good bacteria in your diet
are lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium.
-
The ratio of good to "bad"
bacteria should be 85% good.
When the 85% ratio of good-to-bad bacteria is not present, harmful
bacteria outnumber the good and dysbiosis can occur. Symptoms
of dysbiosis are poor digestion, flatulence, bloating and vomiting.
-
Probiotics
help to treating digestive problems like dysbiosis, leaky gut
syndrome, and various harmful intestinal bugs.
Probiotics inhibit the colonization of
yeast and fungus, so they are useful for treating candida, a frequent component
of leaky gut.
-
Lactobacillus helps us to digest proteins and helps us to absorb
vital nutrients.
-
When antibiotic use has damaged the intestinal flora,
probiotic supplementation is especially helpful in helping to restore the gut to a health
balance of friendly vs. harmful bacteria. This balance that promotes gut lining
health by decreasing intestinal permeability.
